Pure-tone audiometry was performed on a monthly basis to a small group of preschool-aged cleft-palate children. The incidence of hearing loss in the group range from 25 to 71% from month to month. Further inspection of the data, however, indicates that all of the children experienced a significant hearing loss at some time during the study period. The lack of overt signs of hearing loss in the study group suggests that professional monitoring of the hearing levels may be necessary to assure optimum habilitation procedures.
