  • This article is based on a portion of a doctoral dissertation completed at the State University of Iowa under the direction of Professors Wendell Johnson and Kenneth W. Spence. Some of the data were presented in a paper given at the annual meetings of the American Psychological Association, Boston, 1948. Acknowledgment is made to Dr. Edward Shulman and Carmen Dixon for permission to reproduce figures from their theses both in the original dissertation and in the present paper.
